About The California Healthy Families Program

Healthy Families is a State-sponsored program that offers low-cost health, dental and vision insurance through contracts with selected insurance plans. Each county in California has different plans from which enrollees choose. The benefits in all Healthy Families' insurance plans are similar; however, the benefits may be administered differently.

The Healthy Families Program pays most of your child’s costs for visits to doctors, dentists, eye doctors, and specialists. The insurance plans also contract with clinics, laboratories, pharmacies, and hospitals, which are available to you for your child’s health care.

Who is eligible to join Healthy Families?

  • Children

To enroll a child in Healthy Families they must meet all of the requirements listed below:

    • Have not yet reached their 19th birthday
    • Are not covered under a family member’s employer-sponsored health insurance in the last three months
    • Must live in California
    • Are not eligible for or not enrolled in no-cost Medi-Cal
    • Must meet citizenship or immigration rules
    • Families must have incomes within the Healthy Families Guidelines
    • Were born to mothers enrolled in the Access for Infants and Mothers (AIM) Program, who are not enrolled in the no-cost full scope Medi-Cal Program or employer-sponsored health insurance

Pregnancy-related services are also covered by the Healthy Families Program.

  • Newborns

To apply for your newborn, an additional Healthy Families application must be submitted.

Who Provides The Care For Healthy Families Members?

You are able to choose from a selection of insurance companies when you enroll in Healthy Families. Your children will receive care from providers who contract with the insurance companies you select.

How much does it cost?

Monthly fees depend on your family’s income level and range from $4 to $15 per child but no more than $45 per month for all children enrolled at one time, from one family. Some services are provided at no cost to you; a co-payment (usually $5) is sometimes required for services.

In addition to the monthly payment, you will be responsible for a co-payment of $5 to $15 at the time of healthcare service. Some services are provided at no charge to you and no individual charge will exceed $15 for a child's benefits.

The maximum amount you pay per benefit year for health care services is $250 per family. A benefit year is from October 1 to September 30. Remember to keep all of your receipts for the co-payments you make at the time of receiving health care services and let your health plan know if you reach the maximum $250 for the benefit year of coverage.
